At a statewide public school average cost of $12,508 per pupil (2007-08), Maryland's nonpublic schools save taxpayers more than $1.58 billion annually by educating more than 127,000 K-12 students.
Student Scholarships
Scholarships are an important tool for helping low and middle-income families choose the school that best serves the needs of their children. Scholarship-granting organizations are a critical link in the state's education system, providing thousands of students the opportunity to receive a high-quality education. These nonprofit organizations provide a important conduit through which business donations and other private funding can reach disadvantaged families. Once legislation to establish the BOAST Maryland Tax Credit has been passed, more scholarship organizations will be created to provide additional support for students in need.
